Looking for home office storage ideas? One item you will probably think about purchasing is a filing cabinet. While filing cabinets can be handy, they are not the most versatile home office storage solutions out there. You might want to consider plastic containers for paperwork and filing instead. In Part 1, I went over a couple of the reasons why:

1. If you need to move your files, you can.
2. You can decorate them.

It is also worth mentioning that plastic bins are quite a bit cheaper than filing cabinets. This is something I also discussed in passing in my previous article.

Here are several more advantages that plastic containers for filing have over filing cabinets.

3. You can color-code them.

Previously, I talked about how you can decorate your plastic containers for papers if you want to beautify them. While this can be a fun way to spruce up your home office, the visual versatility of plastic containers has other applications as well. For example, you can color-code your bins for practical reasons, making it easy to find the papers you are looking for.

In fact, there are two ways you could do that. One is to decorate your bins in such a way that they are color-coded for practical use. But the other is just to purchase plastic bins in an array of colors to begin with. No extra work is required. The bins are all ready to go.

At that point, the only thing you need to do is come up with a logical system that makes sense to you. Taxes could be in a red bin, work papers could be in an orange bin, bills and receipts could be in a yellow bin, and so forth. You should of course also create labels for your plastic containers so it is even easier to find what you are looking for. There are many innovative approaches you can take to this (browse our blog for ideas).

3. If you ever need to downsize your files, you can repurpose them.

There may come a point in the future where you realize you do not need quite so much storage in your home office for your paperwork. If that ever happens, you will find yourself with more bins than you need.

That is not a bad situation to be in however. There are so many different ways you can make use of your plastic filing boxes elsewhere in your home, or even at your day job. So those bins will not go to waste. In fact, you may already have some projects waiting which they will be perfect for.

As you can see, you do not necessarily need to go the traditional route with your office storage solutions. Plastic containers for filing are much less expensive, can be color-coded for your convenience, and can be customized to your needs. They also are versatile enough to be repurposed throughout your house. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get organized in your home office!
