You already know that decluttering frees up space in your home or office, but did you ever wonder why decluttering feels good? There is often an immediate feeling of relief and release when you finish a big decluttering task. In fact, some people like to clean, declutter and organize when they are feeling anxious for just that reason. Here are a few reasons why decluttering feels so awesome.

1. You are letting go of the past.
The health benefits of decluttering are extensive on a psychological level. A lot of the objects that pile up in our environments are not necessarily associated with positive memories and experiences. They may reflect times in our lives we’d sooner forget, or the expectations of others.

Decluttering is liberating because it helps us release those expectations and experiences. We turn away from the past and look toward the future. We make room not only for new items in our homes, but new experiences in our lives. We also become more particular about what we bring into our lives going forward, both in terms of objects and expectations.

2. You feel less hemmed in.
When you clear your home of clutter, you immediately feel less hemmed in because you quite literally are less hemmed in. Tight spaces which previously felt claustrophobic may feel open and inviting, full of potential. On a purely aesthetic level, decluttering can also be a step forward, especially if you feel most at home in minimalist environments.

3. You are finally free to get organized and make your space more functional.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of decluttering is that it is a prerequisite step to getting organized, at least if you want to do so effectively. When you try to organize before you declutter, you still end up wasting time and space. Anything which doesn’t serve your needs just gets in your way.

But after you have decluttered, you have all those unwanted items out of the way, which means you are only organizing the items which are important to you, many for everyday use. This means that your environment can be fully optimized to support your needs.

4. Once your space is organized, you will spend less time and energy each day looking for what you need to get things done.
When you have a lot of clutter in your way, everything becomes more difficult. It takes twice as long to figure out what to wear in the morning. It takes three times as long to prepare your supper. After the clutter is gone, you no longer have to wade through all that dross. You just grab what you need and go about your day. Life becomes simpler.

There are a lot of reasons why it is a major relief to declutter. So stay motivated, even if it looks like you have a massive chore ahead of you. Once that mountain of clutter is donated, you should immediately be feeling much better about your home or office and your life!
