One of the most popular items for retail stores for organizing items is actually not really an organizational display at all—it’s literally a bin you can dump a number of items into. This item is called, appropriately enough, a retail dump bin display. Dump bins for retail are usually made out of chrome wire so that shoppers can easily see the merchandise inside.

The square dump bin is the most common variety. These come in a number of different shapes and sizes, and some of them even include dividers so that you can put more than one batch of items inside, but keep them separate. Dump bins may also have wheels so that they can be easily carted around the shop, even once they are full. Along with square dump bins, you will also find round dump bins.

Dump bins can be used for just about anything you don’t feel like organizing, but you should know that they are usually used to communicate discounts and special sales. Studies show that sales increase tremendously when you put items inside a dump bin, which makes them one of the most effective and versatile retail sale ideas out there. You should observe the following recommendations when you use dump bins:

• Place your dump bin somewhere that it is going to be noticed. Dump bins should be placed along major pathways through your store, or near the checkout counter. There needs to be some space between the bin and the other shelves. If the bin takes up too much space, shoppers will avoid it because it feels cluttered.

• Don’t organize your products in the dump bin. Firstly, they aren’t going to stay that way, so there’s no point. Secondly, it dissuades buyers from the idea that they are being offered a deal (whether they are or not). Dump bins are often used for overstock, and so you want to give the impression that you don’t care all that much about the merchandise in the bin—that you want it gone, and that you are offering a low price to make that happen.

• Include clear signage. You need to put a sign up next to your dump bin or over it which tells customers that the items are for sale and need to be purchased quickly, before the one-time deal is over. Get customers in the clearance mindset every way that you can.

• Regularly change the contents of the dump bin, whether or not the contents are actually selling. Otherwise customers may start to notice that the dump bin remains full of the same items, and their sense of urgency will dissipate. Keep bins relatively full. Don’t worry about this giving an impression that nothing is selling; it actually gives the impression that you have recently refilled an empty bin with new merchandise.

Now you know how to effectively utilize dump bins in your retail sales displays to compel buyers. Remember, whether or not the items in the dump bin are actually on sale, your purpose is to make buyers believe they are getting a special, one-time deal if they buy now.
