It’s springtime, which is the perfect time of the year to run retail clearance sales. This is a time when customers are clearing out room in their homes for new merchandise. While there are many ways to display clearance items on retail merchandising display racks, one of the most useful types of display fixtures is the dump bin.

Did you know that large wire dump bins actually come in several different types?

Square dump bins. This is your classic type of wire dump bin. These may sit directly on the floor, or you may find wire dump bins with wheels. A square dump bin is exactly what it sounds like—a large square bin where you dump a variety of merchandise for customers to dig through. These are great for small items like hats or scarves or toys.

Round dump bins. These are just like square dump bins, but they have a round shape. You can use them for the same types of items.

Divided dump bins. These dump bins have a wire divider down the center which splits them into two or more compartments. These are a great option if you want to sell a couple of related products, but you do not want to mix them all together in a single bin. So if you work at a ski shop, for example, you could have a divided dump bin with mittens in one compartment and gloves in another.

Dump bin tables. These bins are wide and shallow and raised up at table level; essentially the idea is that you have a portable wire table with sides, so you can stuff in plenty of merchandise, but customers can see most of it at once and quickly and easily grab whatever interests them. This type of bin maximizes the visibility of your merchandise and keeps all of it in reach. This is perfect for selling items like DVDs. You can even purchase folding dump tables which you can easily collapse for storage when your sale is over.

Hanging and stacking dump bins. These are small dump bins which are placed on a vertical rack. They are best for selling lots of small items—and not necessarily just clearance items either. Imagine for example that you run a gift shop in a park. You could use the different compartments for tubes of chapstick, sunscreen, and other assorted small useful items.

As you can see, different types of retail dump bins are useful for different purposes. Sometimes you will see other types of dump bins as well—those made out of plastic or wood. While these bins may have their uses, the wire ones are generally superior since they maximize visibility and allow customers to see what is inside. An opaque bin simply does not grab as much attention or generate as much excitement. If you are using the dump bin in conjunction with a clearance sale, make sure that you promote the discount with colorful, eye-catching signage.
