Looking for storage unit tips and tricks? Whether you are searching for a way to squeeze all of your excess possessions into your current unit or you are hoping to downsize to a smaller and less expensive unit, there is a lot you can probably do right now to free up space in your unit. Here are a few suggestions.

• Use vertical space fully by choosing stackable, same-sized boxes and plastic storage containers. If your plastic totes for storage and your cardboard boxes are all different sizes and shapes, you will have a hard time making efficient use of space when you are stacking them. The more vertical space you can use, the more floor space you might potentially free up.

• Consider adding shelving if this is permitted. This is another way you can make use of vertical space in your unit. The higher you can place them, the better, since you can still stack up items underneath them. Try and go with freestanding shelves which you can rearrange as needed.

• Ask yourself how likely you really are to use your furniture again. A lot of people store furniture with the thought that maybe someday they will be back in a larger house again. In other circumstances, you might hang onto your furniture for sentimental reasons (perhaps you have some beautiful antiques). But a single couch, desk, bed, or cabinet can take up a lot of room in your storage unit. If you are really unlikely to ever realistically use these items, you should strongly consider donating or selling them. If they are special pieces, try and do the latter so you can rest assured they have gone to new owners or resellers who will value them.

• Recycle old electronics. Even if you are in a remote location, there is a good chance that there is a recycling facility near you where you can unload old TVs, computers, peripherals, and so on. Sometimes there is a fee for this service and other times it is free. It usually depends on the items you want to drop off. If you check online, you may be able to find this information on the relevant websites for the facilities. If an item you want to drop off is not listed, call ahead and find out what it will cost to have them take it off your hands.

• Declutter your home and move items out of storage back to your own residence. Sometimes the key to freeing up space in storage is to start elsewhere. If you can clear a space in your home, you can transfers some of your possessions from your unit back there.

Hopefully these storage unit organization tips will help you to free up room in your storage unit. If you free up sufficient space, you might be able to downsize your unit or stop paying for storage altogether. Over the years ahead, that could save you a lot of money!
