Looking for ideas for decorating plastic storage bins, but don’t want to do anything too elaborate or time-consuming? If you want to try a project which involves the most basic supplies and which does not take long at all, one of the best options for how to decorate plastic storage drawers and tubs is to use duct tape.

That’s right—duct tape. It shouldn’t come as a surprise being as duct tape can be used to do just about anything. Okay, so maybe not anything—but it sure can seem that way. The only other supplies you need for this are the bin that you want to decorate and a pair of scissors. Since duct tape self-adheres, you do not need any other form of tape or glue.

There really are no steps involved with this project at all. Just pick a color or pattern of duct tape you like (the other awesome thing about duct tape is that it now comes in every color or pattern you can imagine) and start wrapping it around your plastic container at the top or bottom. Once you get it all the way around, cut the end and start on the next row and the next until the entire bin is covered. If your bin has a lid, you can cover that with duct tape as well (just make sure that it closes afterward).

The hardest part about doing this project is probably making sure that you are applying the tape evenly. If you try going too quickly, there is a chance that you will introduce folds or bubbles to the tape, or that you could end up applying it diagonally without meaning to. So you should push the tape down slowly, and now and again you should pause and check to see if it is still aligned correctly. If it is, you can keep going, again taking your time. If it helps, you can always try drawing some guidelines for yourself before you start.

Once you have finished covering your plastic container with duct tape, it should look pretty awesome. The effect will be a lot like what you would get if you were to decorate a plastic bin using paper. But duct tape is easier to apply since you need to use double-sided tape with paper and it is a lot harder to prevent air bubbles from forming with it as a result.

If you like the idea of using duct tape to decorate a plastic bin but are looking for other ideas, check through our archives. I have included a lot of other ideas for how to decorate storage bins with lids using paint, fabric and other materials.

Decorating your storage bins is a great way to reward yourself for getting organized and an excellent way to personalize your space. You’ll hardly recognize your plastic bins once you’re finished. Don’t be surprised if people visiting you ask you where you bought them, thinking you purchased them that way at the store!
