It’s fall … finally time to kick back and relax now that the kids are back in school, right? Well, maybe not. While autumn does provide a welcome reprieve from the chaos of summer, there are plenty of tasks that should be on your fall organizing checklist.

In fact, one of the best fall organizing tips is simply to stop putting off these chores, however much you want to kick back right now. Remember, the holidays are coming up fast—and the more you do now to get organized, the less you will have to do later in terms of organizing your home for the holidays.

1. Menu and party planning.

Speaking of the holidays, fall and winter are a big seasons for parties. You may be throwing a few yourself, and you might also be attending parties with family and friends. If you are already in the midst of this, you know that it is never too soon to start planning menus, gathering supplies, and getting schedules and invitations ready.

So get started on all of that planning as early as possible. While you are figuring out your Thanksgiving menus this year, think ahead and get your menus ready for Christmas, Yule or other winter holidays as well. When those special days roll around, you will be glad you did. You can spend less time panicking over plans, and more time celebrating with your loved ones.

2. Gift shopping and wrapping.

While you are at it, do not wait until the last minute to tackle your gift shopping this year. Plan your Black Friday run now instead of waiting until just before Thanksgiving (or worse, that same day). Get your gift wrapping station ready to go. Yes, that is technically a winter task, but you should be doing it much sooner!

3. Get the kitchen organized.

With so many meals to plan and prepare, this is also the ideal time to pick up some small plastic bins for food, utensils, and so on. You should also take a look at your spice cabinet and get that sorted if you haven’t already. The more orderly your kitchen is going into Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the less complicated your meal preparations will be.

4. Organize and decorate the foyer.

Finally, with so many family, friends and neighbors coming over to visit during fall and winter, there is no better time than the present to organize your entryway. The last thing you want is to be worrying that your guests will be greeted by a mess. If you beautify your foyer, you can welcome them into your home with a sense of pride.

Once you take care of these 4 fall organizing tasks, you will be able to finally kick back with a mug of cocoa and cozy up with a good book. Get fall and winter organizing tasks out of the way early, and you can look forward to coasting through until spring. You will then be refreshed and renewed and ready to dive into spring cleaning and organizing!
