If you are getting ready for spring at your retail store, it is time to jazz up your window! Creating congestion in pedestrian traffic zones is the first step to pulling customers through your doors. In Spring Retail Display Ideas, Part 1, I shared a number of ideas for spring-themed window displays. These included incorporating nature, using soft pastels, and working in Easter retail window ideas.

Now I want to talk about another fun idea for spring retail window displays, and that is incorporating spring activities. Using images of nature like flowers and baby animals is great for getting people in the springtime mood, but you also want to evoke ideas about what they will actually be doing as the weather warms up.

Here are some ways you can do that:

• Put a mannequin or a product on an old-fashioned bicycle. This is evocative of outdoor activities and lends a carefree atmosphere of nostalgia to a display.

• Set up paper pinwheels. These are very popular this year. They are colorful, eye-catching, and great for framing your products without distracting from your merchandise.

• Add kites to your display windows. Kites are colorful and immediately grab the eye—many of them are like works of art all in their own right. Flying a kite is a traditional springtime activity that families like to do together. The mannequin flying the kites can be dressed up in the spring apparel you are selling. This idea works well with or without an elaborate backdrop. With one, you tell a story (more on that in a bit). Without one, the kites stand out more.

• Display watering cans. This is another popular spring trend this year; people love to garden, and a lot of your customers look forward to getting out in their yards. Work this into a display with flowers for the best effect.

• Equip your mannequins with shopping bags. Put them in breezy summer dresses and they will instantly send the message that warm weather is on its way and it’s time to go out shopping. For many customers, shopping is a social springtime activity. It is a form of entertainment and not just a necessity.

• Tell a story with a backdrop. Imagine for a moment you have several mannequins dressed in spring clothes and standing against no backdrop at all. These mannequins look like they are doing nothing in particular. Now picture the same setup, but add in a background with greenery and some fake grass underfoot. Throw in some Easter eggs and baskets, and suddenly you have a family out on an Easter egg hunt.

Coming up with spring store window display ideas each year isn’t easy. But there are so many unique approaches you can take. To some extent, you will probably be sticking with classic themes and concepts—flowers, new life, Easter, warm weather—but it is how you creatively present those ideas which makes your window stand out from all the rest in your area.
