People have variable definitions of spring cleaning, because they have variable goals. If you already have a perfectly organized home, you probably are planning simply on thoroughly cleaning all walls, floors, shelves, cabinets, and so on. But odds are if you’re here checking out our organizational blog, there are areas of your home that could use some neatening up. Why is spring cleaning the perfect opportunity to get your house in order? Why would you want to go out of your way to do even more work than you have already signed up for? Here are several very good reasons.

• You are moving everything you own anyway. When you are doing spring cleaning, you are forced by the nature of the task to move everything you have. There is no surface that will go untouched, so that means that you will be doing the hard work of pulling everything apart. That is half the chore of getting organized at home, so why not complete the task by putting everything back in a way that makes sense? Equip yourself with some home organization containers and put everything back in order.

• Old, forgotten items will see the light of day. Each of us has areas in the backs of closets and the depths of our basements that rarely see the light of day. During spring cleaning, you will find out exactly what is stuffed away in the darkest recesses of your home. Odds are you will want to keep some of it, so why not organize your basement and attic and label these mysterious old items? The rest you may want to get rid of; so get some plastic bags and get ready to thrift.

• Organizing means less work next year. Ask yourself what is more difficult—pulling dozens of items out of your closet to clean, or grabbing a few organization bins for your closet up off the floor or shelves and moving them to dust and vacuum? Keeping your possessions organized in containers makes it easier to move them and saves a ton of time while cleaning. It is also a lot more efficient in terms of time. Imagine how much faster spring cleaning will go next year if you organize this year as well as dust and vacuum. You might be able to cut hours off of spring cleaning tasks for different rooms in your house.

When you clean your house from top to bottom, you will be focused largely on getting rid of dust and mold, but there is no reason to limit yourself. You are already doing so much of the hard work associated with home organization that it only makes sense to save yourself work next year by getting organized this year. Expect to generate a pile for the thrift store every year. Get rid of the stuff you no longer want or need, and then get ready to organize the stuff you do. An organized and clean home is a happy home!
