If you live in a small space like a studio apartment, you know how frustrating it can be to cook in a tiny kitchen. While it might seem like you have everything you need—an oven, a stove, a sink, a fridge and a freezer—you may be lacking in one essential for food preparation, which is space. Here are a few ideas to help you save space in a small kitchen:

• Use racks inside your doors. One great way to maximize the space in your pantry is to hang racks inside your doors. This gives you a great storage solution for spice bottles. Many of these racks also have hooks you can use to hang spoons and the like. You can also install similar racks on the inside of cabinet doors. You can hang utensils and these and even store bowls and other dishware.

• Buy plastic containers for kitchen use. These are perfect for storing dry goods in your pantry, and can help you to consolidate your space in your drawers as well.

• Use chalkboard paint on your wall. Why? It will free up a bit of counter space. Instead of having a recipe book open and using up the room you need to cook, you can copy the recipe onto your wall and then simply follow the instructions as you go. You can erase it when you are done and put up a new recipe tomorrow. This is a very clever method for utilizing vertical space!

• Get a cutting board that covers part of your sink. This extends your counter space by allowing you to use the space over your sink for cutting vegetables and other cooking tasks. When you want to use the sink, you can simply uncover it by lifting away the cutting board.

• Attach little shelves to the sides of your fridge. They adhere using magnets, so they are really easy to use. These are ideal for storing small, lightweight ingredients like spices, and help to free up space in your pantry for other things you need. You can fit quite a lot of these on the side of your fridge before running out of space.

• Install shelf racks in cabinets. If you have a cabinet which only has a couple shelves in it but plenty of room for more, consider installing some shelf racks. This can actually double your available space in some cabinets, which can make a real difference when it comes to freeing up space elsewhere.

It is a challenge to prepare food in a small kitchen, but there are a lot of clever ways you can maximize the space you have. Organizing your kitchen is all a question of buying the right storage supplies, like racks that go inside your pantry and cabinet doors, chalkboard paint, and magnetic shelves for your fridge. Once you have taken the time to organize your small kitchen, you may be surprised by just how much space you actually have!
