Do you trip over sports equipment, rakes, and brooms when you step into the garage? Do you have trouble pulling you car in and parking it because there is literally no room for you to do it? Do you search everywhere for your tools while you are working on your DIY projects, losing hours just trying to hunt down the right hammer or nail? Here are some quick tips to organize your garage storage.

1. Create labels for your toolbox drawers. It really is amazing how few people actually do this. Sometimes ideas are just so simple and obvious that they escape us! You will save a ton of time hunting for tools if you do this. You also make it easier for other people borrowing your tools to put them back in the right drawer.

2. Purchase some plastic storage bins for garage use. Going with clear bins can help you to see everything in your garage right away. One handy tip is to label every side of every bin, and label the tops as well. That way you do not have to think about how you are putting your bins back. No matter where you put them or which direction they are facing, you will be able to see the label.

3. Plastic bins for storage also are perfect for tools. With toolboxes and pegboards and numerous other tool-specific storage options out there, this is an easy idea to overlook. It’s easy to drop your containers while you are working with your hands and juggling tasks. If your tools are in plastic bins, you don’t have to worry about the containers breaking on the hard garage floor.

4. A plastic bin is also great to put in back of your car. You can use it to organize items and papers that you pick up while you are out and about, but are not ready to bring in and file right away. Keep a trash bin in your garage as well; that way you can quickly dispose of trash from your car when you pull in each day.

5. Some of the best storage ideas for your garage involve clever repurposing of household items. Have some old 3-ring binders you aren’t using anymore? Take them apart and install the holders on your garage walls, and they can hold long-handled tools. If you have a toilet paper holder you don’t need anymore, you can flip it onto its side and bracket it to the wall as a wire or twine spool.

Getting the garage organized can be a big chore. It may be so daunting that you put it off for months or even years. Once you have an organized garage, though, you’ll never look back! It will be so much nicer to work in, and you will probably reach new levels of creativity with your DIY projects and lawn work. You’ll also have an easier time parking your garage once you clear some space off your floor!
