Moving is always a nightmare. There are about a hundred things you need to do, even if you are just going to be moving across town. One of the most complicated and time-consuming tasks by far is simply packing up your stuff in boxes and unpacking it at your new location. Most people go straight for cardboard, but is that really the best option? In some cases, you may want to consider using plastic storage bins for moving instead.

Why choose plastic bins for moving? Here are a few reasons to consider:

Plastic bins are sturdy and strong. It is easy for a cardboard box to break open, even if you think you have taped it well. This is not the case for a plastic bin. Plastic bins will keep your items safely contained in transit.

Plastic containers for moving come in al shapes and sizes. While cardboard boxes do come in different sizes, you will find far more options to choose from when it comes to plastic bins. Plastic storage totes range from very large to very small. Whatever you need to move, there is a bin which is ideal for your needs. You can even put smaller bins inside of larger bins to keep items organized. This is a great way to keep smaller possessions from getting lost or damaged while you are moving.

Clear plastic bins make it easy to see where everything is. While you can label cardboard boxes, the labels can easily be a bit vague. You might have four or five boxes labeled “clothes,” or “books,” or “toys.” But if you opt for clear plastic containers, you can see through the sides. You can still label them, but you may very well be able to tell just by glancing at them which items they contain.

Plastic bins provide better protection to your items. Moisture can leak right through cardboard, damaging contents of boxes. But a sealed plastic bin can keep contents airtight, dry and clean. That way they arrive safe and undamaged at your new house or apartment.

• You can keep using your plastic storage containers after you arrive at your new location. When you finally make it to your new home, you may not unpack everything right away—you have a lot to do to settle in. Piles of cardboard boxes are unsightly, but some plastic storage bins or drawers will not look bad waiting to be unpacked. Plus, you may need some long-term storage solutions, and your plastic containers can be repurposed to serve those needs.

Now you have some reasons to think twice before you decide to go straight to cardboard boxes for your next big move. In some cases, they may still be the best choice, but in a lot of cases, plastic containers can work just as well if not better. Unlike cardboard boxes, they are great for moving and storing your possessions in your new home.
