What makes a house a home? We have all heard that “home is where the heart is.” There are certainly intangible aspects tied to the idea of “home” that we cannot directly control—but actually, there is a lot we can do to make our houses comfier, safer, more pleasing to the eye, and more aligned with our personalities. Once we do that, they can start to feel a lot more like home.

And you know what? It all starts with getting organized around the house. Let’s take a look at some ways in which basic home organization can transform your house or condominium into the home you have always wanted.

1. You find a special place for everything that matters to you.

Another popular saying is, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” That is a big deal when it comes to feeling like we are at home. There are many special items you may have collected over your lifetime, each with its own significance. Those objects deserve their own special place in your abode.

Once you have found those places, you have honored the journey of your lifetime through the design of your environment. That makes any house feel more like a home.

2. Your home organization system is tailored to your needs so that you can run your household smoothly and efficiently.

Another aspect of feeling “at home” is functional. We want our environments to support us, to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. With the right home organizing systems in place, you can streamline your day-to-day activities, keeping items you need accessible and reducing the amount of time you spend on your regular chores.

3. By removing clutter, you can create a tranquil environment.

Part of the concept of “home” is feeling safe. It is hard to feel safe, calm, and centered when you are living in a pigsty. When you get your house organized, you tidy up clutter and create a sense of openness. An environment like this is naturally soothing, and helps to keep us feeling grounded and focused. When you can step into an environment that is naturally peaceful after a long day at the office, it really does feel like coming home.

4. Organizing actually is tied directly to decorating.

Many people think of organizing and decorating as two different things, but they are intimately interconnected—ask any interior designer. When you are organizing your home, you are also determining a great deal about its aesthetic appearance.

This allows you to create an environment which is not only functional, but also beautiful. After all, as architect Frank Lloyd Wright put it, “form and function are one.” Indeed, many home organizing supplies such as clear plastic storage totes can be customized through home DIY projects into stunning, unique containers.

So now you know a few ways in which organizing can transform your house into a home. Read on to How Organizing Makes Your House a Home, Part 2 to discover a few more.
