While it may still be a little too chilly to make good use of your outdoor pool, if you have one, this is a perfect time to get your pool stuff in order. That way it will all be ready to go for summer. You may not have a lot of pool stuff, or you may have tons of it. Some items are easier to organize than others—goggles, small pool balls, and the like are easier to deal with than large floats and noodles. Here are some ideas to keep your pool area organized.

• Buy a large plastic storage container for your pool maintenance supplies. Odds are you have a number of tools around like maintenance test kits, cleaning kits, and cleaning brushes. While you cannot store long-handled upright brushes this way, you can store little hand-held pool brushes and extra brush heads this way. You may also want to get another plastic bin to store sunscreen, goggles, and other helpful items.

• Get several other large plastic containers for small pool toys. If you have more than one child, and each child has his or her own toys, it is a great idea to label the containers with your children’s names. This will help your kids to stay organized and also avoid hassles with each others’ toys. Plastic is a great material for storing pool supplies since unlike wood, it cannot rot from moisture. Use plastic bins without lids to allow pool supplies to dry out.

• Look for specialty storage for large toys like noodles. There are noodle caddies, usually with steel frames and mesh siding (to allow toys to dry out) for these large, awkward toys which do not fit in bins. Raft caddies are also available for storing larger flotation toys. Some poolside organizer storage racks which are designed to hold rafts and noodles even have extra space for small plastic containers. This allows you to consolidate everything in one area for extra convenience and easy access.

• There are also large hang-up organizers which you can hang from hooks on a wall or fence near your poolside. These hang-up containers have mesh siding and allow you to store a number of different floaters and beach balls in one place. This is not an ideal solution for smaller toys though since they can easily become buried at the bottom of the organizer, making them hard to reach (smaller plastic bins are much more convenient).

You and your family are going to want to be out at the pool having fun and enjoying yourselves, not getting organized. Having a great organization plan in place allows you to spend more time swimming and less time getting supplies out and putting them away, and it makes it a lot easier to keep your kids organized too. So get organized now while the weather is still warming up, and you’ll have a lot more fun during the hot summer months splashing around in your pool.
