Organize Your Spice Cabinet

Out of all the organizing challenges in the kitchen, perhaps one of the most problematic is the spice cabinet. You know how it goes. When you first move in to a new place and organize your kitchen, you have just a few spices in your cabinet. It is clean, neatly arranged, and easy to reach inside and get what you want. A few months go by, though, and that all starts to change. A year after you have moved in, your spice cabinet is nigh unusable. Packets are piled up on top of each other, stashed all the way in the back, hidden by other items, and your spice bottles are toppling over and spilling everywhere. What can you do to organize your spice cabinet? Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your space and reduce your spills and messes.

• Try to get your spices into same-sized containers. If you have different sizes of spice jars, this can contribute to the problem of jars toppling into each other and refusing to stack up nicely or all fit on the shelves together. Consider buying a number of glass jars that are all the same size, one that actually fits well in your spice cabinet, and then pour new spices into those jars as you buy them. A small funnel helps with this.

• Buy acrylic-tiered shelf organizers. These awesome little organizers allow you to stack up spice containers at different levels all on the same shelf and make better use of your space. You will be able to see what you have stored on every tier. Best of all, you can actually reach the spices in the back, since they are at a slightly higher level than those in front. You can do this without knocking over the spices in front!

• Purchase some plastic containers for pantry organization as well. Storage bins for kitchen pantry storage are great for dry goods like flour which you may also want to keep with your spices, as well as sugar, cinnamon, and other seasonings you may keep around in bulk. They are great for miscellaneous items as well which would otherwise float around in your spice cabinet and make a mess.

The spice cabinet is not an easy part of the kitchen to get organized, especially if you have a small kitchen. A small kitchen means a small spice cabinet. But that just makes it even more important that you get your spice cabinet organized! When you only have a tiny space for your spices, you need to make the best use of it that you possibly can. Acrylic-tiered shelves, plastic bins for pantry storage, and same-sized spice jars can really help you to get things under control. Imagine being able to reach inside your spice cabinet and actually find what you need without knocking over everything else inside just to get it out! It is possible if you are willing to make the effort and invest in a few inexpensive supplies!
