Recently, I shared tips and tricks to declutter your makeup collection in How to Declutter Your Makeup, Parts 1 and 2. Once you have your collection culled down to what you really want to keep, what can you do to organize your makeup collection?

There are a lot of different possibilities here. Many people are tempted to go out and shop for an acrylic makeup container. This usually takes the form of a small chest with multiple clear compartments which you can use to organize makeup brushes and containers or blush, eye shadow and lipstick.

These chests are designed specifically to hold makeup products, so you might think that this is the most sensible solution. The problem is that quite often these makeup chests have very high price tags, sometimes up to $100 or more. For a lot of people, that simply is not affordable as a storage option. Odds are good that there are a lot of other things you could buy for $100.

This is why instead of investing in expensive acrylic makeup organizers, I recommend simply investing in plastic bins with dividers. A simple clear compartment storage box will run you around $10, and provide you with a number of different compartments where you can store eye shadows, lip gloss tubes and other makeup containers without them all getting mixed together.

You can even buy one which includes a lid which you can close. That way you have a portable storage solution which you can easily relocate to another drawer. A small enough container may even be something you can pack into luggage when you are traveling. Some include handles for convenient carrying.

Even if you end up needing to purchase several of these storage boxes for makeup, you will end up spending maybe a third of what you would for a large, fancy acrylic makeup organizer. And if you do not have a huge collection, you may only need one or two smaller compartment storage boxes.

So there you go. Why spend $100 when you can get away with spending maybe $10-$30 to organize your makeup collection? You can then take all that money which you saved on storage solutions and invest in actually buying more makeup now and in the future.

What is also great about these standard clear compartment storage boxes is that they are useful for all kinds of applications. Let’s say you end up downsizing your makeup collection at some point in the future. You can repurpose one of your storage boxes for something else, like craft supplies. Later, if you end up buying more makeup, you can easily go out and spend another $10 to scale up your makeup storage once again.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most overlooked—but also the best. Once you have your makeup organized in plastic clear compartment boxes, you can easily find what you are looking for in the morning, and you can also move your makeup from drawer to drawer or room to room. It’s a small investment which pays off in big ways!
