Clear plastic bins are excellent for painting supplies because you can see inside them. Color coded plastic bins are also an ideal choice, because they lend naturally to sorting paint. You can put all of your reds together in a red bin, all your blues together in a blue bin, and so on.

Compartmentalized plastic bins offer a great choice for sorting your paint brushes and other tools you use to do your work. You can easily sort brushes by size and type and keep them from getting mixed together. You can also try plastic or glass cups or glasses to hold your brushes, but this can be inconvenient since it is all too easy to squash the brush bristles when you reach in to pick one up.

Larger plastic bins can also be used to hold canvas, paper, and other surfaces for painting. If you paint three-dimensional objects (like driftwood, for example), you can store those items and other multimedia objects in bins as well.

Once you get your supplies together, you’ll need to organize the entire space so that it is comfortable, accessible, and conducive to painting. Pay attention to where the light is in the room, and choose a spot to set up your aisle where you can benefit from the light. Keep your bins and shelves around the edges of the room and give yourself plenty of space in which to stand and work. The cart is ideal for moving a lot of supplies from the shelves to your painting area and back. Just don’t forget to put them back when you’re done or you will quickly begin amassing a brand new pile of clutter next to your aisle. While it will take a little extra time to sort your studio out in the beginning, it will free up lots of time for painting later!
