Calling all cat owners…do you have difficulties getting your cat to use the litter box? Do you think you would have better luck with at top-loading model, but don’t want to spend a ton of money to purchase one? Top-loading litter boxes can go for as much as a couple hundred bucks—but they don’t have to. It turns out you can build a litter box yourself from scratch using cheap materials like a plain old fashioned large plastic storage container. Here is how to do it.

Directions:

1. Get a large plastic storage tub with lid. Any large container that fits this description will work just fine for making a litter box.

2. Grab a dinner plate and place it on top of the lid. Draw around it so that you get a nice round circle. Do not put it right in the middle! Make sure it is toward one end, so that the other end can function as a sort of step/platform. Otherwise the cat has nothing to climb up or down onto.

3. Cut the hole out of the bin. The best way to do this is to heat up a knife blade using a candle, and then start sawing through. Go carefully so that you do not create cracks. If you do, you can use a soldering iron to close them, or you can just tape over them (make sure that you apply the tape to both sides if you go this route).
`
4. Sand down the edges of the hole with some sandpaper so that they are not sharp. If you leave them as they are, they could pose a danger to your cat.

5. Put some duct tape around the edges of the hole to further pad it. You can also use duct tape to decorate the bin and give it a more fun and “completed” look. Get creative with bold colors and fun patterns here, and you can achieve a customized appearance which is much cooler than anything you’d find at a store!

6. As an optional addition, consider buying some stair-tread carpet and cutting it to fit the lid of the plastic bin litter box. You can use the same dinner plate to trace a matching hole. You can then use double-stick tape to attach it to the top. That way when your cat emerges from the bin with litter crumbs stuck to his feet, the crumbs will stick to the stair-tread carpet instead of getting all over everything.

You should be able to do this entire project for under $20 easily, maybe even less. That is nothing when you think about the comparable litter boxes you can purchase which cost about ten times that! Creating your own litter box is fast and easy, and you should be able to get it done in an afternoon. Your finished litter box will look just as good as a more expensive store bought one, and will function just as well. Most importantly, your cat will love it just as much!
