Getting organized at home can be a daunting challenge. But for a lot of people, it is even harder to know how to stay organized. You can put months of effort into getting your house in order only to have it all fall apart again a few months later as you fall back on old habits. Following are some tips to stay organized.

• Always put items away or get rid of them immediately. Do not let them accumulate in a pile on your desk or counter. Focus on preventing clutter, and you will have less decluttering to do later.

• Make a schedule to organize your time. It is a lot easier to keep your space neat and orderly when you have the time to do it. Make decluttering and organizing part of your regular weekly or monthly to-do list.

• Purchase the home organizing supplies you need to keep everything tidy. As the saying goes, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Bins, boxes and drawers provide the places you need for storing your possessions neatly.

• Reduce the influx of incoming items to the best of your ability. That means you might need to learn to say no to a bargain or discount while shopping now and again. It also means you may need to talk to family members and friends about your efforts to stay organized and clutter-free. You might need to encourage them not to send you unnecessary gifts over the holidays. You can instead plan to spend time together to celebrate.

• Plan meals early. If you do not plan your meals in advance each week, you will probably end up buying a lot more groceries than you need. This in turn will clutter up your kitchen. If you only buy what you need, you will have more room in your cabinets and on your countertops.

• Talk to other members of your household about staying organized. It is impossible to keep things tidy if your spouse or children are just messing them up again. Get them to take an active role in helping you out.

• Motivate yourself with rewards. Another trick to staying organized is to make it worth your while. Organizing is worth your while in its own right—but oftentimes we are motivated more by things we want than things we need. For that reason, you should come up with a system where you reward yourself in some way for sticking with your organizing plans and strategies.

Staying organized is not easy; in some respects, it can be every bit as daunting as getting organized in the first place—at least until you have some practice. Once you develop new habits and you follow them for a few weeks or months, staying organized should come naturally. Perhaps by this time next year, you will not even think about what you do to stay organized—keeping your home tidy and running your household smoothly and efficiently will be easy.
