If you have been looking for closet organizing ideas, you may be considering organizing your closet by color coding. If you are still undecided, I recommend reading my post, “Why Organize Your Closet By Color?” If you’re ready to organize your closet by color, then let’s get started.

1. Take out all of your clothing.

The first step in color coding your closet is simple, and that is to take out everything that is inside. You do not necessarily need to tackle all of it once, but it is the fastest and easiest approach. Note that if you do not feel you have time to do this, there is an alternate approach, which I will mention below.

2. Put it all back, but hang all items which share a similar color close together.

Now you need to hang all your clothing back in the closet, but do so by color. I do still recommend that you separate clothing by type first, then by color. So for example, you can hang all of your skirts or slacks on one side of your closet, and all of your shirts on another. But each section will have color-coded subsections.

As I mentioned, you do not necessarily need to actually remove all of your clothing and put it all back if you do not have the time. The alternate method is simply to gradually create color categories as you hang up your clothes after doing the laundry each time. If you have one red shirt, put it next to another red shirt, and so on. Eventually, you will get there.

3. Try to aim for a rainbow spectrum from left to right.

Technically, it does not really matter which colors be placed adjacent to each other. Having said that, you will get the most aesthetically appealing result if you arrange your colors in something roughly like a rainbow spectrum. Obviously, it will not be exactly like a rainbow, since you may have browns and tans and other colors that are not in a rainbow.

4. Items with a lot of different colors can have their own section, or simply go in the section for their dominant color.

What about clothing with colorful patterns? Usually if there is a dominant hue, I just put those with the others that share that hue. If on the other hand the colors are all over the map, I just place these items together in their own section.

5. Get some colorful plastic bins for folded shirts, accessories, etc.

You do not need to stop with simply color coding your hanging garments. You can also color code folded shirts and pants, and maybe even some of your accessories. A great way to do this is by purchasing a set of plastic bins in different colors. Each of the colors tells you exactly what is inside (green shirts go in a green bin, blue pants go in a blue bin, etc.).

Now you know how to organize your closet according to color. It is really very easy, and once you have done it, you will love the look and functionality of your closet space!
