When it comes to trying to figure out organize socks and underwear, underwear is arguably the greater challenge. It is relatively easy to fold or roll up socks into compact shapes, but underwear and bras tend to misbehave in the sock drawer, making a mess of your closet. The moment you try to pull anything out of the drawer, everything else tends to unravel and get strewn together. So what can you do to organize your underwear drawer more effectively?

1. Get bras out of the drawer entirely
First things first—remove any bras you have stuffed in your underwear drawer. There are better ways to organize bras in the closet. In fact, stuffing them in a drawer is a great way to deform them out of shape and ruin them fast. To maximize their lifetime, do something else with them, like hang them on the inside of the closet door. Hopefully this also frees up space in your underwear drawer.

2. Get rid of everything that is falling apart.
The next thing you should do is declutter your underwear drawer. There are many types of underwear which form holes quickly (like practically any underwear which is made of lace), but all can be worn out with time. Clean these items out of your drawer, leaving only the underwear which is genuinely wearable.

3. Use plastic containers with compartments.
The next step is to find a way to sort your underwear. There are cloth organizers for this, but I recommend plastic bins with compartments instead. Why? Simply put, those cloth organizers are flimsy. They are designed to offer some flexibility, which is good, but the downside is that their walls tend to get squashed when they are stuffed full. At that point, they don’t really do much good. Plastic is rigid, and does a better job keeping everything contained.

4. Add labels (depending on how you sort).
Your next step is to pick a method for sorting, and then add labels to the bin compartments if doing so is useful. One option for example is to sort by color. If you do that, you do not really need labels, because you should be able to see at a glance more or less where everything is.

But another option is to sort by style. Lacy items can go in one compartment, briefs can go in another, and so on. If you choose to sort this way, you may have a hard time seeing what goes in each compartment without labeling. You may want to think about all this before you select your bins so that you can pick bins which you can easily label (for example, bins with a row of long, narrow compartments—that way you can just tape labels on one side which line up with each).

While it takes time to organize your underwear drawer, you will be glad when the job is done and it is once again easy to grab what you need each day!
