Have a shelf in your home which doesn’t have enough space on the top? One great space saving idea for home is to set up a hanging storage bin system. You may be able to do this using the plastic storage totes you already have on hand along with your existing shelf. Here is how to make it happen.

Materials:
• Simple cheap plastic storage bins
• The shelf you want to hang the bins on
• Wood you can use to make cleats
• Sandpaper

Directions:
1. First, you need to glue wood pieces together to create cleats. You can use a very simple design for the cleats. For each, you need a long piece of wood. Lengthwise, it should be about as deep as the shelf. The other two dimensions can be square. Glue it to a flat piece of wood which has a matching length.

2. Wait for the cleats to dry. During this time, you can start working on the pilot holes in step 4 if you’d like.

3. Sand the cleats and then spray paint them a color that you like.

4. Pre-drill the cleats and drill pilot holes if necessary in the shelf (if the wood is soft enough, you may get away with skipping this step). Take your measurements carefully so that the cleats will support your bins. Why not use wood glue to do this? Screws will be more secure and will also reinforce the cleats themselves.

5. Attach the cleats to the bottom of the shelf.

6. You can now slide your bins into place, resting the lips of the bins on the cleats so that they hang underneath.

Benefits of Wall Hanging Storage Bins

• This system looks great. It has a nice, neat look to it.
• If you use the DIY method described above, you can customize this system to fit your needs. Even if you are really constrained on space, you can get it to work.
• You can easily double your shelf space this way, so long as you have enough space between your shelves to install bins under each.
• This is an easy project, even if you are a beginning woodworker.
• If you are feeling ambitious, you could even build your entire shelf from scratch. You really just need a basic shelf to do this; a couple of wood planks attached to each other at right angles may be all you need (you could even just go with a single wood plank for a minimalist design so long as you have the hardware to connect it to your wall).

A DIY hanging bin system can work well in any room of your home, and it can even look good in an office. So if you are ready to free up a ton of space and give your shelf space a new look, go for it. Once you have given this project a try, you probably will feel inspired to try other DIY bin projects as well!
