Plastic food containers have a lot going for them. They are versatile, lightweight, easy to store, and can be repurposed elsewhere in the house if they get damaged over time. Properly cared for, they can last for years. But they have their drawbacks too, one of the biggest ones being that they are incredibly hard to get clean if they end up getting greasy.

If you are desperately trying to figure out how to clean greasy plastic containers, you have come to the right place. I am going to teach you how to remove oil from plastic. And believe it or not, it is easier than you might think.

You can actually get grease out of plastic containers without anything special. All you really need is soap. Most people simply do not use enough of it, and they do not apply it as directly as they should.

Simply filling the plastic container with water and squirting in a bit of soap and swirling it around is not going to do the trick.

What you need to do is empty the plastic container and remove as much of the food residue from inside as you can.

Then you are going to squirt the soap into the container before you put any water inside.

Next, you are going to have to rub the soap around the container using your fingers or a sponge. Make sure that you have coated the entire interior surface—all the walls of the container plus the bottom and especially the corners, which can be challenging to get at.

After you have done this, you can pour hot water inside from the sink to rinse out the soap and finish the job. If you did a good job scrubbing your clear plastic food bins with soap beforehand, you should find that most of the grease comes right out with the soap as you rinse.

Once you have thoroughly rinsed the plastic containers, you can dry them with a towel. If you did a thorough job, you will probably find that there is not a speck of grease left inside your containers.

If you still are not getting the results you are looking for, you might be using a soap which is just not effective enough (especially common with off-brand dish detergents). Try switching soaps to see if that works. You do not need to purchase an expensive soap; you simply need to use one which is reliable.

Another tip is to try using paper towel. Just rub your plastic containers down briefly with paper towel under running water. Many people say that this does a great job loosening up the grease. This is likely because paper towel is somewhat abrasive while also being absorbent.

There are a lot of alternatives to dishwashing soap you can try (vinegar for example), so that is another option with particularly stubborn grease. But in most cases, soap and a bit of elbow grease is really all you need to wash oily plastic bins.
