It may still be winter, but it is never too soon to start planning for spring and thinking about your garden! Today I want to talk about different ways you can use plastic bins for gardening. There are so many creative uses for simple plastic storage totes that you will be amazed!

• Storage bins for garden tools. If you are tired of finding a mess in your garden shed, this is the time to get your tools in order! Plastic containers are great for organizing, and if you have leftover bins, you can purpose them as planters.

• Use plastic bins as planters. Want to garden, but struggling to figure out where you are going to do it? You are not going to find a cheaper and more effective option for urban gardening than a DIY plastic bin planter. A lot of people use these to grow vegetables even on small decks and patios!

• Plastic bins make perfect seed starters. Just use small bins or large bins with small compartments. You just need two to three inches of depth and drainage holes, which you can easily bore on your own if you need to. Once your seedlings get to the point where they need a larger space, you can transfer them to separate planters or plant them in the ground.

• Create a self-watering garden. If you are handy and willing to take on a more involved project, you can create your own self-watering plant containers. These are excellent if you live in a location with poor soil quality.

• Build a miniature greenhouse. Have a short growing season? You can extend it by setting up seedlings inside a greenhouse constructed out of a plastic bin. This is also a great way to keep away the pests and make sure plants don’t get exposed to harsh weather. It couldn’t be easier!

• Get into hydroponics. If you’ve always wanted to try hydroponics, but you thought you needed a lot of specialized equipment to get setup, think again. You actually only need a few specialized items and some plastic storage bins. This is another involved project, but it can turn into an amazing hobby.

• Create your own compost bins. Why go out and buy a fancy compost bin when you can just turn an ordinary plastic storage bin into exactly what you need? You can make your own compost bins for worms and have a never-ending supply of safe, eco-friendly soil treatment and fertilizer for your garden.

These are just a few great ideas for using plastic storage containers for gardening. Once you get started, odds are you will come up with a lot of other great ideas we haven’t even listed here. Few supplies are as inexpensive and versatile. You will probably change up what you do with your garden each year, but when you do, your plastic bins will be ready for you to repurpose for some other use in the yard or in your home!
