You’ve just come back from the shopping mall with bags loaded down with clothes and shoes. You’re super stoked about everything you just bought, but then you open your closet and your face falls. Where are you going to put all this stuff? The floor of your closet is cluttered with shoes, boots, and random items, and you cannot possibly stuff another hanger onto the rod. You are totally out of room. So what can you do?

It is time for some DIY closet organizing hacks! No matter how hopeless it may seem, there are things you can do to get the most out of your closet space. Let’s take a look at some easy ideas to transform your closet and make room for new clothes and shoes.

• Re-purpose specialty hangers in unexpected ways. One way to make more room in a small closet is to remove unnecessary hangers. Say for example that you own dozens of tank tops. If you have them on dozens of hangers, you are wasting a lot of space. That is not even the most efficient way to store tank tops, as they can easily slip off and fall. The solution? Grab a tie hanger with a single hook, and put several tank tops on each branch of the hanger. You will free up a ridiculous amount of space this way, and your tanks are less likely to fall.

• If you do have a ton of hangers crowded into your closet, you probably have clothes slipping off of them a lot every time you try to pull something out or put something back. Prevent this by wrapping pipe cleaners around the hangers where the sleeves rest. Your hangers will no longer be slippery!

• Get some drawer dividers. Some people make these out of cardboard or purchase the cloth variety, but plastic divider boxes for drawers work best. They are a lot more sturdy, and provide you with plenty of compartments. You can even buy a plastic divider box with lid for your drawer; this will prevent hairclips and other tiny items from getting lost.

• Try using PVC pipes. Have a lot of socks, underwear, scarves, or other small clothing items which you can roll up? One space-saving method for storing these items neatly is to stuff them inside PVC pipes in your drawers. If you do this, they will never get all strewn together again!

Getting your closet organized is probably not going to be a one-day chore. But you can divide the work into smaller tasks which you can take on one at a time. One day you could organize your tank tops, and a few days later you could tackle your scarves. The next day you could deal with your hair and makeup, and so on. Each time you finish a task, your closet will be a little more organized, and eventually, it will transform completely. Looking for more tips and tricks?
