The kitchen is an area in the household that often becomes a center of chaos. Preparing and cooking meals is already a lot of hard work, and cleaning up afterwards just adds to it. Odds are that you are lazy in some respects when it comes to your kitchen; even the most organized of households may have a bit of a mess in the kitchen. Look inside your fridge or freezer. Does what you see make you cringe? Do you have unexplored depths in the back of the fridge? What about your kitchen pantry? When’s the last time you looked at what’s in back on the top shelf?

It can really pay off—literally—to take some time to get your kitchen organized. There are a number of benefits to organizing your kitchen cabinets and drawers, your refrigerator, and your freezer. The most obvious one of course is that your kitchen will look and feel like a more pleasant, inviting environment. But there are other benefits as well. Here are just a few:

• You will actually know where everything is, which makes cooking an easier process. Think about how much time you waste searching for ingredients. Now think how much easier your job would be if you were well organized. Pick up a food container set. You can use plastic food containers with attached lids in the freezer and fridge, in the pantry, and in your cabinets. Open-face plastic bins small enough to fit in your drawers are also ideal for utensils. You can cut down on your cooking time this way, which can remove stress from your daily schedule.

• Say goodbye to old, unsafe food. When you let food pile up in your fridge or freezer without being eaten, you may risk contaminating healthy, non-expired foods. You also may eat old food on mistake without realizing what you are doing. Children may be particularly susceptible to this hazard. Throw out that unsafe old food when it expires to keep your kitchen a healthy, sanitary environment for everyone in your family.

• Stop wasting money on food you do not eat. When you have a cluttered kitchen, you can easily misplace and forget about foods which you would otherwise have eaten, if they were in plain view. When you stop wasting food, you stop wasting money. You also may think more carefully about what you really do and do not need when you are in the grocery store. Imagine how much you could save each month in grocery bills just by getting organized!

Plastic food containers are quite affordable, and they are a supply which can turn your kitchen around. If you make just one New Year’s resolution this year, make the decision to organize your kitchen. You only need a few hours to really transform your kitchen, and once you do, you will be so glad that you took the time. You will save so much money, time, and food, and your kitchen will be a healthier and more enjoyable place to cook and to eat.
