Have a hard time just walking through your home because your floor is filled with piles of clutter? Whether you are looking for tips to declutter the garage floor or free up floor space in your closet, bedroom or living room, here are some tips to help you tidy up.

1. Invest in shelving.

The number one way to get stuff off your floor is to put it on shelves. Yes, it is simple and mundane, but it is affordable and effective. If you are not making good use of your wall space, it is time to purchase some shelves. I recommend free-floating shelving since it can be positioned wherever you want. You can set up the spacing to accommodate different sizes of items.

2. Consider building custom shelves if necessary.

What if you do not have much space on your walls for shelves at all? Does that mean you cannot use them? Not necessarily. In tiny houses for example, many people utilize custom shelves built for corners. You can do the same. You can build these shelves yourself or you can commission someone else to design them for you.

3. Hang more storage from your ceiling.

Another excellent way to get stuff off your floor is to use hanging storage systems. There are some store-bought solutions here, like hanging baskets (usually used in bathrooms or kitchens), but you can build solutions as well.

One great system which is perfect for decluttering your garage for instance is to construct a set of storage bin tracks on the ceiling. Then, purchase plastic bins with lips which can slide along the tracks and stay in place. Using this DIY garage ceiling storage method, you can get a ton of items stowed away overhead, freeing up an abundance of space below.

4. Add hooks to your walls and the insides of your doors.

One more easy way to free up floor space in any room is to implement hooks. In the kitchen, sets of hooks on your walls are ideal for hanging utensils, pots and pans, mugs and more. In the bathroom, you can use hooks to hold your towels.

You also should consider installing hooks inside of your closet doors in your bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and other areas of your house. Often times, there is space inside your cabinets and closets which goes completely underutilized. Adding hooks allows you to make use of the space without blocking off access to the items on your shelves inside. Everything you store on the hooks is easy to grab in an instant.

No matter which room in your house has a cluttered floor, you now have a number of ideas for clearing out some space. Once you do, it will not only be easier to move around, but your home will look and feel more comfortable and open. Just make sure you do not return to your old habits. Keep using your off-the-floor storage solutions to maintain that open space!
