Retail merchandisers know that it is a challenge to keep up with layouts and displays on the sales floors. It is important to regularly change your displays to keep repeat customers engaged and coming back for more. At the same time, you have to keep your layouts simple and easy to navigate, or you will drive customers away. Here are 3 retail store organization tips that you should never forget, no matter what you sell.

1. Keep your displays simple and clean.
By “clean” we mean a clean aesthetic (obviously your displays should always be dusted). Busy, complex displays that make too many demands on the eye and the mind tend to cause shoppers to be distracted and ungrounded. When shoppers cannot focus on any one thing, they are not going to purchase any one thing. Have a look around your displays. If you walked into your own store and didn’t immediately know where everything was, would you be drawn in ten different directions at once? Would you be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of items on your shelves? Would it be helpful to purchase a few more retail shelving systems?

2. Keep displays visible throughout the shop.
Does your store utilize unnecessarily high shelves which make it hard to see other areas of the shop? Are your shelves set up in such a fashion that customers will feel lost or trapped in specific areas? You always want to keep your retail store as open as possible, so that it is natural to drift from one area of your shop to another. This is not the same as making your shop cluttered or creating distractions. When possible, use wire or glass retail shelving displays which allow customers to see through to other areas of the shop. These displays can still be visually clean and simple, but they do not cut off line of sight to the rest of your store.

3. Use signs with your retail product displays.
While your displays may seem like they speak for themselves, it never hurts to provide some more information in the form of words. Signs are great for alerting customers to sales and discounts, seasonal products, and other specials they may be interested in. Signs should stand out, and use concise, simple phrasing to create opportunity for both you and your shoppers. Bright colors are good for drawing attention to signs. The signs then draw attention to your products.

With these retail display organization tips, your business should be ready to usher in 2014 as a year of success. Take some time to rearrange your displays each day and make small changes to keep things fresh and interesting for regular shoppers. If you always keep these simple tips in mind, you will be able to make changes without disrupting the flow of business in your store. You should see the improvements in your organization system reflected in your bottom line as buyers more easily locate merchandise they need and discover new items they might have overlooked before.
