This holiday season, if you have a little extra time, you should try and figure out the best way to organize holiday decorations. There’s no one answer for everyone; it depends on the types of ornaments and other décor that you have in your house. There are some very simple, cost-effective solutions out there though which can save you time and hassle.

Plastic bins with dividers for tree ornaments. This is a perfect solution for safely stowing your Christmas tree ornaments this year! A lot of people use divided cardboard boxes, but divided plastic bins are even better, since they can protect your ornaments from fluctuations in humidity and temperature in an attic or basement. The divided bins keep ornaments from scratching or breaking each other, and also make them easy to grab and pull out of the box the next year. Just pack them in the plastic container with dividers with a little tissue paper and you’ll be good to go next Christmas.

• Neatly put your holiday lights away. You can do this using a Christmas light reel (the best solution). If you do not have one and don’t want to buy one, carefully loop each strand of lights and place it inside a sealed freezer bag. This works great for a couple of reasons. First off, it prevents tangling. Secondly, if you leave a pocket of air inside, it acts as protection for the lights. You can place all of these bags inside one large plastic container.

• As an alternative to the methods above, you can store Christmas lights by wrapping each around a large piece of cardboard a number of times. Stack up the pieces of cardboard inside a large plastic box. This once again prevents tangling, and makes it easy to unfold the lights again the next year.

• Help bows keep their shape when you put them away this year. If you are storing Christmas bows (like those included in wreaths or garlands), fold and tape cardboard tubes and insert them into the bows so that they hold their shape. This is a handy tip to prevent bows from wrinkling.

• Resist the urge to put holiday recipes into storage (like for sugar cookies). Instead, just store them with the rest of your recipes and carefully label them so that you can find them next year. Otherwise you will wonder where you put them. Don’t bury them at the bottom of your ornaments box!

All of these quick tips and tricks are wonderful for storing your holiday décor at the end of the year. As you can see, you do not have to invest a great deal of time and energy into storing your holiday décor, and the only supplies you really need are a few plastic bins and perhaps a reel for your Christmas lights. When you put away your holiday decorations in January, you can rest assured that it will be a lot easier to get everything ready for Christmas next year!
