When is the last time you looked over your retail display ideas and thought about how you could improve your merchandising displays? It is all too easy to slip into the habit of thinking of merchandising display racks as simply somewhere to put your products. Merchandising display systems are sales tools and can boost conversions if you use them right. Here are some common mistakes retailers make when setting up their retail displays. Be sure to check out Part 1 of the series to find out more!

1. Forgetting to integrate signage and retail store monitors.

You can set up a nice display of items that are on sale, and still not make a whole lot of sales if the sale isn’t obvious! Put out helpful signage which openly tells customers browsing through your shop that the items are on sale. Let them know if there are any special conditions—for example, if buying one item means that another is available half off. Signs are also great for providing product information, for example letting customers know if products are handmade or local. Think about buying some retail store monitors as well; these are becoming more and more common as technology becomes integrated into retail displays around the world.

2. Distracting customers through loud signage.

Even though you want to include helpful signage throughout your shop with your retail display racks, you need to maintain a careful visual balance. The signs should draw attention, but they should not actually be so “loud” visually as to distract from the products themselves! This can be a tough line to walk. The best thing to do is to start split testing with different signs if you are unsure, and see which ones are actually performing better. Eventually you will get it down to a science.

3. Never changing your displays around.

When you have a comfortable setup that seems to be converting, it is easy to want to just sit back and relax and watch as the sales roll in. But it is never that easy. Customers get bored easily, and if your store is the same every time they step inside, they will become fickle and move on to another. So you need to routinely move your displays around. Even if all you do is find a few layouts that work really well and rotate through them throughout the year, that will help! Seasonal displays also are a great idea to keep things fun and fluid. If you do really well at creating changing displays, people will come to your store as much to see what kind of new atmosphere you have created as to shop. Remember, all sales ultimately start with creating foot traffic, so anything that draws customers in is good!
