Do you own a wardrobe or a walk-in closet which is an absolute mess? If so, it can be very helpful to read some tips for organizing your wardrobe before you jump into the task of organizing your clothing in earnest. It can be quite a big job, but the more organized the approach you take, the more organized your space will be in turn. Here are some quick tips for organizing your clothes.
• First, pull everything out and get rid of anything you no longer really need or want. Donate those clothes or give them to friends who may want them. Some of it you may also be able to sell. Having trouble figuring out what to clear out? Ask yourself if you have worn the items in question in the past year. Consider whether you feel good when you are wearing them. Lastly, ask yourself whether someone else would be happier with them. If an item of clothing is likely to be a better fit for someone else (literally or figuratively) than it is for you, it is probably time for that item of clothing to move on.
• Increase capacity if you need to. If you have a large closet, but you are out of hanging room on your rod, you may be able to add a second rod. This will give you more room for tops, slacks, and so on.
• Invest in some plastic storage container. Clear plastic containers for shoes are very popular, as they keep shoes from getting into a jumbled heap and make it easy to grab whatever pair you want (a must if you are a serious shoe lover, and have dozens of pairs!). Plastic cube containers are also ideal for socks, underwear, and even for folded-up shirts and skirts. This is an excellent solution if you are running out of hangar space and do not have the option to add a second clothing rod.
• Come up with an organizational system for attire odds and ends like scarves, hats, and handbags. It is easy to convince yourself this is not within the realm of your task, but these items will only add to your clutter if you do not do something about them. This is something else that plastic bin storage works very well for. Try to go with clear plastic cubes for these as well, since you will be able to see instantly what is inside.
Getting your closet organized will take time and creativity, and probably a number of days of work. Try to break it down into smaller tasks which are easier to tackle. If you try to organize your entire closet in a day, you will probably get frustrated. Do just your tops one day, your skirts and dresses another, your shoes the day after, and so on until the job is done. Look online for inspiration. Every closet is different, and so are the needs of every person. One organized closet will look quite different from another, but there are a lot of wonderful ideas you can combine to come up with the perfect system for yours.
