There are a lot of reasons why you might need to rent a storage unit. Maybe you are moving across town and you are in between homes. Perhaps you just moved from a larger home or apartment into a smaller one. Maybe you are moving out of town for a while (or permanently). Whatever your reason for needing storage, chances are good you will need to access your stuff now and again.

That is why it’s important to learn how to organize your storage room. Here are some storage unit organization ideas to help you out.

1. Make sure you get the right size unit.
First things first. Your number one step in optimizing your space is to figure out how much of it you need! If you have too much, you will waste money, but if you have too little, you will be cramming everything in to the point where it isn’t accessible. So plan to have at least enough empty space that you can get inside and pull out whatever you need.

2. Label all your boxes and bins clearly.
Attach labels to your plastic bins for storage and your cardboard boxes so that you can see at a glance what is what. Consider labeling all sides of your bins and boxes so that you can clearly see the labels no matter how they get packed in. While you are at it, consider taking a detailed inventory and writing a list of all the items in storage. You may not see the need now, but in a few years, you will be glad to actually know what is in those boxes. You will not have to dig around to find out!

3. Think strategically when you place items in your unit.
When it comes to learning how to organize storage space, you are looking at more than a real-life game of Tetris. In Tetris, you never have to access the bottom blocks again. With a storage unit, you may need to dig inside regularly. So be sure that items at the bottoms of stacks or in the back or very high up are not those you will need to grab. Make some room at the front by the door for boxes and items you will regularly need to access.

4. Pack everything carefully so nothing breaks.
If possible, pack your storage unit yourself (and plan to unpack it the same way). But if you do need to deal with movers, then it is extra important to make sure that delicate items are carefully packed and padded. Movers tend not to care what they break, so expect your possessions to be subjected to rough treatment.

Packing a storage unit the right way does take extra time and effort, and at a time when you may be in a hurry. If you can manage it, take these extra steps. They will ensure your possessions are safe and secure and available when you need them. In the long run, this will save you time and hassle.
