Have a lot of clutter in your house, and can’t seem to stop adding to it? One of the most common reasons why clutter accumulates is that we make a lot of impulse purchases. In this article, I will share some tips for avoiding impulse buying with you. That way it is easier to keep your home decluttered, organized and tidy.

1. Wait a week and see if you still want it.

One of the best tips to stop impulse buying is to give yourself a mandatory time period to wait before you make a purchase. This could be a week, a month, or any other period of time you think is sufficient. I recommend a week at the minimum.

The idea here is that you will wait out your compulsion, and hopefully it will lose its power. You also will have time to think about the purchase and whether you truly want it. If over that time period your anticipation continues to build instead of wane, maybe it is a good buy after all. If you find yourself forgetting about it and moving onto other things, it is for the best you did not waste your money.

2. Use cash instead of a credit card.

Researchers have found that consumers are less likely to be tempted into overspending if they are paying with cash rather than a credit card. So leave the plastic at home. The more “real” an expense feels to you, the more thought you will put into the value of the purchase, and the less likely you are to buy new clutter.

3. Force yourself to work for your purchases.

Another great trick is to give yourself permission to buy the item in question, but only if you meet some other condition first. If you have a job where you are allowed to pull overtime, working to cover the expense is perfect.

Don’t have that flexibility? There are other ways you can work toward something you want. You can for example promise yourself the item as a reward for doing something challenging, like meeting some other professional or personal goal.

If the item doesn’t seem worth all that effort, maybe it isn’t. If it is, excellent—you will get the item and you will achieve a goal.

4. Check your stress levels before you go shopping.

Finally, why do people make impulse buys at all? Quite often, the driving factor involved is stress. If you notice you are really stressed out when you are about to make an impulse purchase, you probably should wait. You may very well find that in a more relaxed frame of mind, you no longer feel any need to buy that item.

Now you have some tips to avoid clutter in your home. The less clutter you accumulate, the less work you will have to do decluttering now and in the future. You will also waste less money, and the people who really need the objects you were going to purchase unnecessarily can get them instead!
