If you have the benefit of living in an area with a diverse population of birds, bird-watching is a hobby which can be both entertaining and educational. One of the best ways to attract new avian friends is by putting out one or more birdfeeders. As you will quickly discover, though, storing your bird-related supplies can be something of a challenge.
The problems involved with storing bird supplies are twofold. First off, birds can go through a lot of seed, and the seed can therefore take up a lot of space. Usually you buy this stuff in huge bags. Finding somewhere to put your seed once you open the bag is a challenge unto itself.
The other difficulty is dealing with mold. Birdseed is organic, and as a result, it does not hold up well to certain climate conditions. If you live in a place with moisture, your birdseed is going to be particularly prone to mold. Leave it exposed to the open air long enough, and it will rot. Once it does, you will have another issue, and that involves cleaning. Moldy seed sticks to the edge of any container it is in, and scraping it off can be a real pain.
You can solve these birdseed storage problems by using clear plastic bins. Plastic storage bins are ideal for birdseed for several reasons. Firstly, if you purchase the clear bins, you can see at a glance what is inside (though it can still be helpful to label them). Secondly, you can purchase very large plastic bins, which are ideal for the bulk birdseed you purchase to save money. Thirdly, plastic containers for storage can be sealed and made airtight, providing protection against the elements. This prevents your birdseed from molding and keeps it fresh for weeks. That means no more messy cleanups, and no more wasted birdseed or wasted money.
You can also use clear plastic bins to store not only birdseed, but birdfeeders. While many people leave out their birdfeeders all of the time, it is a bad idea to do it when it is raining. If you have left birdfeeders out in the rain, you have probably been frustrated by what you have discovered afterwards. Just as seed in storage exposed to moisture can rot, this can also happen to seed in a feeder. Then it sticks to the sides and you have a really difficult cleaning job (reaching those inside walls on certain types of feeders can be nigh impossible). Plus, if you have a wooden or cloth feeder, exposing it to moisture can cause the feeder itself to rot, mold, or fall apart. By putting the birdfeeders away in plastic bins, you lock out moisture and protect them so they can offer you years of use.
Plastic storage boxes probably aren’t something you think about when you think about bird supplies, but they are some of the most useful and versatile supplies you can purchase. They are great for storing birdseed, hummingbird food, birdfeeders, bird guides, and more!
