Ideally, your kitchen should be organized come Thanksgiving morning! All too often though we get to Turkey Day and realize that our kitchen is a complete mess. Sometimes it only hits us when we actually start trying to cook a meal for a dozen people, only to realize we don’t know where anything is. Take it as a wake-up call, and an opportunity to get your kitchen in order before Christmas and the other winter holidays. After all, you have more big meals to prepare for before the year is over! Here are a few quick tips for organizing your kitchen for the holidays.

• Start by cleaning out your fridge and pantry. It’s time to get rid of those expired foods and free up some space. Once you complete that step, head to the store and pick up some plastic bins for food storage. These are perfect for getting dry goods and spices in order. This is one of the most helpful tips for organizing your kitchen pantry. Small plastic containers are also great for de-cluttering your drawers and getting silverware in order.

• Get your recipes somewhere convenient. Do you have all your holiday recipes stored away in the back of a cupboard somewhere? Saved on your computer? Stuffed away with your Christmas décor? Look for them now when you have time and not later when you will be fretting and trying to get everything ready to cook. Put them somewhere easily accessible inside your kitchen.

• Organize your kitchen drawers and make sure that not just ingredients, but also utensils and cookware are where they should be. Another great tip for holiday cooking is to attach labels to serving dishes. Why? It is easier to get people to help you with the cooking when they can find the right dishes at a glance. Your kitchen can be a confusing place for other people to navigate.

• Plan the timing in advance. When it comes time for your holiday parties, there is going to be a lot of chaos. Come up with a cooking and serving schedule before your guests arrive, and plan smart strategies to keep the kitchen in order. One great idea is to make sure you are serving appetizers and beverages in another room. This keeps the party out of the kitchen so you can stay organized and efficient.

Kitchen organization is a challenge at any time of year, but there is no time when it becomes more daunting than over the holidays. If your kitchen was a mess this Thanksgiving, it doesn’t have to be by the time that Christmas rolls around. Take the time to get it in order now. Purchase helpful organizing supplies like plastic bins, get rid of expired foods and items you no longer use, and come up with a plan for scheduling your cooking before you throw your holiday parties. The extra effort you put in now will pay off huge later. ‘Tis the season to be merry … and organized!
