Trying to come up with cool ideas for summer retail displays? One classic idea which will never go out of style is the beach window display. Time spent at the beach or the swimming pool is an almost universal association with summer. It doesn’t matter where you live. If your store is located near the beach, the ocean theme is a perfect fit. Located in the Midwest? That doesn’t matter one bit. Shoppers are longing for a day at the beach, and you can use that in your merchandising display ideas.
There are numerous different ways you can approach the idea of a beach (or pool) window. Here are just a few ideas:
• Bring real sand into your display. While this can be a mess to set up and clean up, it immediately conveys “beach” like nothing else!
• Put up a backdrop which includes images of the beach or water. Some people go all-out here and use a huge photo of an ocean backdrop. Others simply put up an abstract backdrop suggestive of the sea.
• Make use of simple but effective props. There are numerous ideas here you can go with. Set up umbrellas, prop up surfboards, or string hammocks between fake palm trees. Pile children’s toys in the sand. Set up pool floats and tubes and round life preservers. Paint them in fun colors. Set up a grill with some fake fish or shrimp. Hang seagulls, jellyfish, or beach balls from the ceiling. Set up driftwood and build structures out of it like people do at real beaches. Erect colorful beach tents. You can even go with a fantasy theme incorporating mermaids and other mythological elements.
• Set up your mannequins as if they are engaged in real beach activities. Actually stand up a mannequin at your grill. Have others wearing colorful life preservers. Sit others down on the sand around a fake campfire made of colorful paper. Have others relaxing for a tan. There is so much you can do here! Dress them up in beach clothes or swimwear. Look for clever ways to integrate your merchandise into the display.
Basically, with beach displays, the sky is the limit; they are one of the most versatile summer window display themes. No matter what approach you decide to take, make sure that you are observing design principles when you put your plan into action. Think carefully about your balance of space and form. Choose colors that complement one another. Make sure that your display has a focal point and isn’t too “busy.”
You can reuse your props next year in your summer window display, but be sure that you don’t completely duplicate your setup. Long-term customers will check back to see what you have done with your window and will be disappointed if they are the same year after year. If you come up with an exciting new design every time you change your window, you will build a reputation in your shopping district which will draw crowds of buyers.
