How to Declutter Your Makeup, Part 2

Makeup clutter is something which builds up steadily in the background of your life, without you even noticing it—until one day you realize that you have absolutely no free space on the top of your dresser or your bathroom counter, and that you cannot locate that one shade of eye shadow you are desperately seeking. You can find dozens of other colors though that you seldom if ever wear.

At that time it is time to declutter makeup and skincare. In Part 1, I talked about a few different ideas to help you to declutter your makeup drawer:

• Gather everything together in one place so you can actually see what you have.
• Throw out expired products (use common sense when doing this; the dates on the containers are not always hard rules).
• Get rid of duplicates.
• Pass items on that you are unlikely to use before they expire.

Now I will share a few more ideas with you to help you declutter your makeup bag.

• Ask yourself if everything you have actually works well for you. You might love that shade of lipstick, but does it flatter your skin tone? And what about that beautiful shade of eye shadow which matches absolutely nothing in your wardrobe? Even though these may be products you like, it does not make a lot of sense to keep them if they do not suit you. And that brings me to the next suggestion.

• Try and decide if some products might work better for other people you know. Maybe that eye shadow which matches none of your clothes would work great with a friend’s wardrobe. Makeup is pricey, and many of your friends would probably be happy to take products from you which you cannot use and which they would use a lot. If a product is wasted on you but would be perfect for somebody else, pass it on to that person. It will reduce your clutter, and the gift will be appreciated (just make sure your used makeup is hygienic).

• Would you buy everything in your collection again? If you still find yourself with more makeup than you know what to do with, pick up each item that you seldom use and ask yourself, “Would I ever buy this again?” If the answer to that question is “no,” why do you need it in the first place? If it is not worth its price to you anymore, you do not really need it.

Getting your makeup collection decluttered can be time-consuming, and in some ways it can be painful. You may be quite pleased to have dozens of shades of purple eye shadow or dozens of pink lipsticks, but if you do not really wear them, they are only standing in your way (and going to waste). Once you have reduced your makeup collection to the items you actually use and enjoy, you can organize your makeup drawer so that it is easy to find what you need.
