Shopping for retail window display supplies? This is the perfect time to think about boutique window display ideas. A lot of stores take a relaxed approach to their clothing window displays. They simply switch the clothing on the mannequins or move them around a bit. They might add or subtract a shelf or hang some products.

These ideas vary your windows, but do they keep them fresh? Not exactly. All they do is switch things around. They don’t actively grab attention. They don’t reach out and shout at customers, “Here is something you HAVE to see.”

The best fashion retail window displays go a step further. They display merchandise in a quirky or unusual fashion. The draw of the display isn’t just the merchandise. It is also the props and decorative accents and backdrops which work together to create a unified whole. In short, creative retail displays are an art form. Pedestrians are drawn in by the art, which then makes them curious about the store and the merchandise on display.

How can you turn your retail windows into works of art? Here are a few tips to take your displays to the next level:

• Change your retail displays frequently. You may be tempted to stick with the four seasons, but changing your displays once every other month or so is a better rule. You can still stick with seasonal themes, but you can also look to holidays. Don’t be afraid to diverge from these well-worn paths either. Come up with a unique theme which no one else is using. Don’t be afraid to be unusual—that will only serve your purpose since it will arouse curiosity.

• If you must reuse themes and materials, then do yourself a couple of favors. Switch things around each year (say if you do a fall theme every autumn). Don’t put up a display that was identical to last year. Even more importantly, do not simply rearrange the materials in your window from one month to the next and consider it a “new” display. Move those materials to some other area of the shop. Put new materials in the window that were not there before.

• Always have a focal point. One of the biggest newbie mistakes with retail windows is to clutter up the window without any focus. Observe professional design principles, taking into account your use of space, color, form, and texture. Make sure that you give objects in the display case plenty of room!

• Don’t be afraid to go big and eccentric. Don’t be too concerned about “making sense.” Displays that are strange and eccentric can be very eye-catching, especially if they feature large focal elements. Those large focal elements do not even have to be merchandise. They could be something artistic and random. As long as they draw attention, you’ve succeeded.

Creating beautiful retail display windows really is an art form. While it may not gain a lot of recognition as such, pedestrians passing on the sidewalk will walk through the door and purchase your products. And that is worth it!
