Home Organization Myth #10: Organizing is a Luxury, Not a Necessity

In this series, I have discussed a number of different home organizing myths that are used as excuses for not getting organized. In this series, I have discussed a number of different home organizing myths that are used as excuses for not getting organized. I want to discuss one final myth now, which is this:

“Getting organized is a luxury for those who have the time and energy. It isn’t actually needed. It just looks nice.”

There are a couple of reasons why this is a myth:
• Even people with more time and energy than you still have constraints on their schedules. They still choose to make organizing a priority.

• Organizing is not just about making things “look nice.” It is about making your household more functional. Beautiful photos of organized homes on Pinterest can cause us to forget that ironically home organization isn’t all about appearances (but having a beautiful home is definitely a huge plus).

You may be wondering about the top reasons to organize your home. Why is organizing more than a luxury? Here are some concrete, practical reasons to get organized:

• You will save time and money. When you are constantly misplacing items, you end up wasting time searching for them or even spending money unnecessarily on replacements. Odds are time and money are two things you could use more of!

• You will not deprive others of what they need. When you are disorganized, you also tend to have a lot of clutter. One of the best reasons to declutter your home is so that you can identify items you do not really want or need and donate them. There is already too much waste in our world. Contribute to charity, not to waste!

• It is easier to focus on your responsibilities and even to relax when you have a clean, organized home. Your quality of life improves. You are less likely to feel overwhelmed on a day-to-day basis. This means you are also less likely to forget about important tasks you need to do. This in turn helps to clear your head and your schedule so you can finally unwind.

• An organized home is a functional one. Think how much easier it is to prepare a delicious meal when you can find everything at a moment’s notice in the kitchen for example. When you are stuck searching desperately for the right ingredient or utensil, you don’t just slow down your cooking—sometimes you ruin your recipe.

• When you organize your home, you have a chance to pass down those skills to your children. Strong organizational skills are not just helpful around the home—they are necessary in the workplace as well. When you teach your kids how to get organized, you are giving them skills they can use to thrive in life.

All of these are reasons why an organized home is a happy home. Organizing is not just a luxury for those who do not work full-time jobs, or those who have extra help to take care of the kids. It is something which is a true necessity for all of us!
