We are approaching the end of summer, which means it is time to start thinking about fall store window display ideas. It isn’t easy to come up with an original concept every single year, but customers do remember past store windows and hope to see something new each autumn.

In Fall Retail Display Ideas, Part 1, I shared a few concepts and themes for fall retail window displays. While checking out what top stores are doing this year however, I noticed a number of other retail window display trends for fall which are worth reporting.

• Tree branches. In Part 1, I mentioned the timeless idea of using fall leaves in your retail display. If you’re looking for a related idea which your competitors are less likely to be using, you can try tree branches instead. There are many ways that you can approach this concept. Some stores actually bring in aesthetically-pleasing branches from outside and arrange them in their windows. Others might draw a tree on a backdrop, or even on the window itself. Paper cutouts work well for this also. Tree branches have many pleasing lines which you can use to help direct the eye to your merchandise.

• Antlers. I’m not sure of the exact association with autumn, but antlers are another big trend this year in fall retail display windows. Like the tree branches, they have aesthetically appealing geometry, and they also work in well with the warm tones and colors which you are probably using in your display.

• Abstract shapes. You do not necessarily need to use props which are immediately evocative of fall, Thanksgiving or Halloween in order to suggest the spirit of the season. Oftentimes, sticking with autumn colors such as orange, gold, red and brown is sufficient. This year we are seeing a lot of retail windows which incorporate these colors through abstract shapes and forms. This is a great technique because it is very eye-catching and it allows you to keep things simple. This helps to maintain a focus directly on your merchandise.

Remember to keep the basics in mind when you’re putting together your fall windows. With autumn windows in particular, it seems easy to get drawn into the trap of clutter. Since fall is a time of harvest and abundance, we tend to try to interpret that visually through an abundance of items. But if you go overboard with this, it’ll detract attention from the products you are trying to showcase. It might also block out the lighting you need to highlight them. So avoid that temptation and keep things focused.

Now you should have many ideas for putting together the perfect fall retail display. Combine classical themes with modern trends and utilize key design principles to show off your merchandise. This will create congestion in front of your shop and fuel curiosity about the products inside. This in turn will draw customers through your door so that you can capitalize on the fall retail rush!
