Are you looking for someone to organize your home or office? If so, you might be thinking about working with a professional organizer. But is hiring a professional organizer worth it? In Part 1, I went over the benefits of hiring a professional organizer. In this part, I will go over the drawbacks.

Cons of Hiring a Professional Organizer:

• Hiring a professional to organize for you costs money. How much does it cost to hire a professional organizer? It can vary, but typically it will be several hundred dollars. That actually is quite reasonable if it totally turns your life around (and it may), but if you do not have several hundred dollars to spend right now, organizing on your own may be a better option.

• You may feel embarrassed about your mess. The stress of having another person see the clutter you are ashamed of may be more than you want to deal with. In theory, the professional should know better than to judge you, but that doesn’t mean you will not feel judged.

• If you have control issues, you may not like handing the reins over to someone else. Letting someone move your stuff around or try and change the way you schedule, file, and so on may be intensely frustrating and invasive.

• It may be a challenge to find someone who understands your organizing challenges and needs. Even a professional who has worked with a wide variety of clients may still struggle to understand what makes organizing challenging for you, and what kind of system will fit with your psychological needs. No amount of customization will do the trick if the professional cannot understand you at a basic level.

• Learning to use a system you didn’t set up yourself may be hard. If you go to the effort of designing your own organizing system, you will understand exactly how it works, and you will comprehend the logic behind it. But a system designed by someone else may seem alien and unfamiliar for a long time before you get used to it.

• You will not learn as much watching someone else work as you would devising your own solutions. You certainly will learn something from watching a professional organizer, but you would learn a great deal more if you applied your creativity to the problem and came up with answers of your own. We all know the old saying about teaching a man to fish. The same applies with organizing.

So should you hire a professional organizer? Only you can weigh the pros and cons and come up with your own decision. For some people, hiring a professional organizer is stressful and expensive. For others, it is a major stress reliever, and ultimately saves time, money and hassles. You will need to think about your needs and then choose the path to an organized home or office which makes the most sense for you.
