It’s the time of the year for turkey, cornucopias, and sales! If you are in retail and you still haven’t dressed up your window this year, it’s time to get on that so you can draw valuable pedestrian traffic into your shop! In Create an Awesome Thanksgiving Retail Display, Part 1, I shared some ideas and design principles for visual merchandising displays for fall. Here are some more retail window display ideas which are perfect for Thanksgiving.

• Take advantage of cheap Thanksgiving decorations to use as visual merchandising props. If you’re in a rush to put together a last-minute window, you don’t need to buy anything fancy or expensive to convey holiday cheer. Purchase some cheap cornucopias, fake leaves, and gourds from the grocery store. You’ll only spend a few dollars on these items, but they immediately get shoppers in the fall spirit. And remember, the fall spirit is also the spending spirit!

• Bring real objects in from outdoors to work into your retail window displays. Instead of just using fake leaves, for example, consider using real ones (though be warned, you probably don’t want to go overboard here, because the leaves will gradually turn brown and lose their color, after which they will not have the same effect). You can also look for pinecones and hay and other objects that shout “fall” from outside. These can work beautifully in your displays, keeping them natural.

• Create warmth through color. Even if you have no props at all to use in your Thanksgiving displays, you can still evoke the holiday spirit simply by using fall colors. That means warm shades like reds, oranges, yellows, and browns, as well as other colors on the palette which have warm undertones. Green for example is a cool color, but olive green has a warm undertone, and can work into a fall display. Showcase any merchandise you have in these colors, and you are likely to have some sellers, especially in attire. People love to dress for the season.

• Make use of light. This is yet another way to create warmth in your Thanksgiving displays. This is the time of year when the days are growing shorter. It is cold and dark by the time most people get off work and are able to head to the shops. You can offset that chill and gloom by lighting your fall retail display windows beautifully. Don’t just rely on overhead directional lighting. Try working in fake candles, string lights, and colored and incandescent lights for a homier look. Invite passersby to take a break from the cold and dark, and step into a warm and welcoming shop.

Now you should have some great visual merchandising design ideas for where to start with your Thanksgiving retail display windows. Even though you may not have time to do something fancy, you can put together something really lovely and compelling to draw in passersby with just a few simple props from outside and the right colors and light.
