If you still don’t have a fall window display set up at your retail store this year, it isn’t too late! You may not have time to create a display using elaborate visual merchandising display ideas, but you can put something simple together with ease using a lot of items readily available during the autumn season. Here are some fall retail display ideas using simple visual merchandising display props for Thanksgiving.

• Always start with a theme. “Thanksgiving” may not be a specific enough theme. Oftentimes visual merchandisers cannot figure out why it’s so hard to come up with ideas; usually it is because the theme they are using is way too broad. Instead of “Thanksgiving,” think of a theme like, “Thanksgiving family meal,” or, “Out for an autumn evening walk,” or “Thanksgiving harvest.” These are all more specific and will help you to create a scene or a story in your retail window display.

• Make sure that every display has a focal point, something that grabs the eye. Stand in front of your own window while you are planning, and figure out where eye level is for customers strolling by. Do not be afraid to hang objects from the ceiling in order to make use of this focal space if you need to. Many artistic displays use this technique to great impact, but it is amazing how many retailers still seem to shy away from trying it.

• Keep your display simple. A Thanksgiving display in particular is in danger of becoming cluttered because there are so many small props which you will probably be tempted to work into your display. Many of these props make great choices, but be sure not to make the window too busy. Try to distribute these items in a manner which makes sense, and leave plenty of open space to offset your focal objects.

• Use baskets. Baskets are among the many symbols people associate with Thanksgiving. They are old-fashioned and call tradition and history to mind, and they also convey a sense of abundance when you fill them with other objects. You can even use the same retail display baskets you have throughout your shop! Fill some with ears of dry corn, and others with your products. This invites pedestrians passing your window to stop inside and reap the harvest of your merchandise!

These are just a few ideas for creating beautiful Thanksgiving retail display windows which will really turn heads. Thanksgiving is the time of the year to make retail sales. Black Friday after all is the very next day. Capitalize on that fact, and consider posting notices about your Black Friday sales in your Thanksgiving retail windows. Look for an artful way of doing it which integrates nicely into the aesthetic of your design, and you will achieve an amazing effect—and lots of foot traffic.
