Have you ever thought about putting together a long-term food supply? Many people associate long-term food storage with survivalism, but it actually has many other applications. It doesn’t take the end of the world as we know it to make a back-stock of foodstuffs useful. Sometimes all it takes is a long power cut or a blocked road in the country.

It is usually a good idea to start out by building a food supply for just a week, then progress to a month, and from there to 3 months, and eventually to a year. It may sound challenging, but you will find that a lot of it comes down to stocking up on dry goods like grains and pastas. How can you store these dry goods? One great option is plastic food storage containers with lids.

Anytime that you purchase plastic food storage buckets, you need to make sure that you are buying pails that are made out of food grade plastic (all of ours are). Here are the advantages which plastic food pails confer:

• Plastic is inexpensive. If you were to invest in metal pails, you would end up paying a lot more money. You will need a number of these food buckets to store all the different types of dry goods that you need. So you should look for ways to keep your costs down.

• Plastic is lightweight. You can carry it easily from one spot to another with minimal effort. Even though your pails will be heavy once they are full, they will still weigh less than they would if they were made of metal. Our containers include built-in handles which make lifting easy. They also nest for compact storage when they are not in use.

• Airtight plastic containers keep food fresh. Ours include snap-on lids, so they form a good seal.

• With plastic, you do not have to worry about the problems that come with other materials. Plastic will never rust and you will never have to put up with chipping or peeling paint. Rust and paint are two things you do not want contaminating your food supply.

• Even though plastic doesn’t keep out rats and mice, it does do an excellent job keeping out insects.

• If you want, you can create even more of a seal around your food by packing it inside foil pouches first, and then storing them inside the plastic food buckets. Doing so is wise because plastic is a porous material, so it is never completely airtight. This gives your food even more protection while the buckets provide the utmost convenience.

As you can see, plastic is one of the best all-around choices for storing dry goods over the long term. A lot of people resort to metal bins, but they are expensive and do not offer you quite as much versatility and convenience. So unless you are storing your dry goods in a room which is prone to rodent infestation, you should be good to go with plastic food-grade storage pails!
