If you don’t have a family command center, you may wonder why you’d need one. A command center sounds more like something that belongs in a military headquarters after all, right? But a family command center can be quite useful, and there are a lot of great family command center ideas out there which are easy, fast and affordable to set up. Plastic storage containers are among the most popular family command center products.

What is a family command center? In case you don’t know, it’s simply an area in your home where everyone in the household can stay on the same page. Usually this area is in the mudroom, the entry hall, the kitchen, or another convenient spot near the front door. A typical family command center will have calendars, storage bins for mail, receipts, coupons, and more. Why do you need one? Here are a few great reasons:

• Don’t you hate when you schedule a doctor’s appointment only to find out that someone else in your family needs the car that day? Never mess up scheduling an appointment again. When everyone in the household writes down their appointments on the calendar, anyone can reference it before scheduling something new. That way there will be no annoying overlaps, and no one will have to reschedule anything.

• Simplify mail. You can save each other runs to the post office if there is a box for outgoing mail. Whoever is heading to the post office can grab whatever is in there and go. Additional plastic storage boxes for receipts and bills can keep finances clear and well-organized. This can really come in handy throughout the year, especially at tax time.

• Streamline school activities, chores, errands, groceries, menu planning, and more. Activities like these are so much easier to plan and coordinate when you write notes down where everyone can see them. This is especially true during the school year when everyone gets so busy. There may be days you hardly have time to touch base with each other. The family command center helps everyone keep in touch and take care of what needs to get done without losing track of who has done what.

As you can see, a family command center can be quite handy. While the name may sound a little militaristic, in many ways it fulfills the same role as a command information center. It isn’t just used for the purposes of telling people in your family what they need to do, but for facilitating clear communication, saving time, and maximizing efficiency. This isn’t just for the convenience of the head of household, but for everybody living under the same roof. Your spouse, children, or housemates will all really appreciate knowing what is going on, and having a chance to communicate with you and with each other even when things get really busy around the house. A well-organized command center prevents misunderstandings and hassles, and allows everyone to spend more time enjoying themselves and living comfortably.
