Autumn rolls around each year so fast! Just yesterday you probably feel like you were getting your summer displays ready, but now it’s time for a change in the leaves and the wind and your retail displays. Here are some fall retail display ideas and tips to get you started.

• For fall retail store displays, stick with natural materials. You can make use of wire racks and plastic shelving, but you will achieve the best effect if you make use of wood shelving and baskets for retail display. These materials are atmospheric and evocative. They are especially suited to Thanksgiving, which hearkens back to an earlier time when wood was the primary material for building and shelves.

• Go with warm colors. Autumn is traditionally associated with warm, deep hues: oranges, reds, golds, coppers, browns, purples. These hues immediately call fall to mind, and make an excellent choice for the décor in your autumn retail windows and displays. If you are selling clothing in particular, you are going to want to showcase attire in these shades. They will work with your theme and are also likely to be big sellers. Check to see what colors are especially in vogue this year as well. Put out some clothing in those current fall colors along with the traditional autumn shades.

• Work in the holidays. As early as the start of September, many retail stores begin selling Halloween costumes, décor, and supplies. That means you can start working in holiday themes before summer is even at its end. Combine Halloween and Thanksgiving imagery into your fall retail window displays, and you will appeal to the seasonal sense of fun and whimsy which dominates autumn.

• Integrate autumnal themes throughout your store. A beautiful and creative fall window display will draw customers into your shop, but the décor doesn’t have to stop there. Look for ways to work in fall decorations throughout your shop, and use that décor to lead buyers to specific areas of the store you want them to visit—displays where you are selling seasonal items or where you are offering special discounts. Create a pathway of autumnal wonder throughout your store.

• Think about who your customers are. For stores which adults mainly shop, consider more subtle, sophisticated, artistic autumn displays. For shops frequented by children, work in cute displays that will appeal to kids.

It takes a lot of time and thought to put together a really clever fall display in your store. But once you do, you will draw more customers inside and keep them there longer. The right décor can ignite curiosity and move foot traffic through your aisles. This in turn can boost your sales. If you have really creative and unique displays, customers may even tell their friends about them. Sometimes buyers show up just to see the amazing fall decorations you have put up, and end up spending a lot of money on seasonal merchandise before they walk back out the door again!
