When fall rolls around, if you are in the retail industry, you are in for an exciting time. In most industries, this is the best time to motivate customers to spend money. They are thinking about buying décor and supplies for the holidays, gifts for family and friends, and new warm clothes for the winter.

You probably already have set up your fall window display props and have your merchandising display ideas all figured out. But what about your marketing? Here are a few ideas for fall marketing promotions to drive your sales.

1. Launch a contest on Instagram

There are so many fun activities that families and individuals plan for fall—so why not ask your customers to share what they are up to? Hold a photo contest on Instagram for a theme related to your business. Sell knives? Hold a pumpkin carving contest. Sell yard equipment? Ask customers to share photos of their leaf-raking efforts, and so on. Select a winner at random or based on merit or on votes from your followers, and then reward that person with a discount or free item.

2. Come up with unique promotions for the holidays.

Every store can have a Thanksgiving or Christmas sale, so try and think of cool ways to phrase your promotions which are relevant to the season. For example, if you run a ski shop, run a “Fresh Powder Friday” sale (okay—that one may be more suited to winter sales). If you run a bookstore, have a “Spooky Reads Week” where you offer a discount on all horror novels to celebrate Halloween.

3. Thank your customers.

Thanksgiving is all about thanking the people who are important to you—and nobody should matter to you more in business than your customers and clients. Send out thank-you cards for Thanksgiving with time-sensitive discounts which your customers can use to shop for the holidays. This could not be better timed since this can be combined with Black Friday promotions.

4. Don’t forget “You’re Welcome” Day.

This is an informal holiday which usually is recognized as taking place on the day following Thanksgiving each year. So don’t just tell your customers “thank you”—also let them know they are “welcome” to a discount. To celebrate “You’re Welcome” day, run a promotion with the wry tagline, “You’re Welcome.”

5. Small Business Saturday makes for another great opportunity.

Did you know that Small Business Saturday also falls in November? If you run a small business, you should absolutely take advantage of this. Customers are encouraged to shop at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, so many people are already thinking about offering their patronage to companies like yours on that day. Give them some added incentive through a promotion.

Hopefully you enjoyed these autumn marketing ideas! Get your fall retail store displays all ready and then put a few of these ideas into action. You will boost engagement, stand out from the competition, and drive sales, making the most of the season!
