Declutter Before You Decorate for the Winter Holidays

A lot of us like to give ourselves a bit of a break during fall and winter. We have worked long and hard through the year, and now we just want to kick back, snuggle up to the fireplace with a good book, and watch the snow blustering by the window while we stay warm and cozy. Yes, we will declutter after the holidays. But there is no need to get a start on it now, is there?

We all deserve a break, but you may actually be creating more work for yourself this way, not less. Worse, you may simply be creating a mess.

These days it is common to decorate for holidays much further in advance than we used to when we were kids. Each holiday bleeds into the next. We are already setting out Halloween décor in September. Come October, our Thanksgiving cornucopias are already out on the tables. In November (and sometimes October!), we are bringing out our Christmas decorations and decking the halls.

But if you do not take the time to declutter holiday decorations throughout the fall and winter seasons, you will end up with more tinsel and fake fall leaves than you know what to do with.

To declutter for the holidays, make it a point to at least put away most of your decorations for each holiday before you set up décor for the next.

So before you set up for Thanksgiving, you should put away your Halloween decorations—at least the majority. And before you set up for Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, or Kwanzaa, you should put away the majority of your Thanksgiving decorations. You can certainly leave out a few favorite items, but you will have far more room for your winter décor if your autumn décor is out of the way.

Plus, you will find it easier to stow everything properly inside separate containers. I recommend that you purchase at least several large plastic bins for storage. If you can, select bins in different colors you can easily associate with each holiday. You could for example purchase several orange bins for Halloween, several red or green bins for Christmas, blue bins for Hanukkah, or so on. Whatever you do, pick a consistent color scheme.

Next year, when you go to get your holiday décor out of storage, you will instantly find what you need. When you are getting ready for Halloween for instance, you will go straight for the orange bins.

Taking the time to declutter between holidays will ensure a more consistent look for your décor, and will give your decorations more room to shine. It will also make it a lot easier to pack everything away after New Year’s Day. Instead of having to put away all your Thanksgiving and Halloween decorations, you will only need to sort and put away your winter holiday décor. Even though it may feel like a lot of work coming up with an organizational solution now, you will be glad you did come January!
