Fall is actually the perfect time to start thinking about Christmas ornament storage ideas. Yes, the holidays are still a ways away, but in the mad rush to get everything set up for the holidays, it is easy to get burned out. Afterwards it is difficult to take the time to come up with new storage solutions. You end up just putting everything back the way you found it—even though that often means a mess.

This year, make the commitment to create a few clever storage solutions for Christmas decorations before the holidays. That way you will have those solutions ready and waiting for you when it is time to take down the tree.

One particularly brilliant and simple idea for storing Christmas tree ornaments involves using a plastic storage bin.

Steps:

1. Start by purchasing a large plastic storage box. Bigger boxes are better since you likely have a number of bulky ornaments to store. Ball ornaments in particular take up a lot of space.

2. Acquire two or more wooden, metal, or plastic rods which can span the length of your plastic storage tote. The material is unimportant; all that matters is that the rods are slightly longer than the tote.

3. Measure the diameter of the rods, and then drill holes in your tote near the top. You should be able to slide the rods through the holes on either end so that they span the length of the box.

That is all you have to do to prepare your tree ornament storage bin. So the next question is, “How do you use it?”

This is quite simple as well. Simply pull on one of the rods so that it is still running through the hole on one end of the tote, but the other end of the rod is inside the bin. This allows you to string the ornaments along the rod. Once the rod is full, simply push that end back through the hole. Fill up the other rod or rods the same way.

This system is awesome for the following reasons:

• You can instantly find your ornaments just by opening the bin. You will be able to see them all at once.

• They are extremely fast and easy to remove from the tote when it is time to decorate your tree.

• They are likewise very fast and easy to put away at the end of the holidays.

• They will not get all tangled up in storage. This prevents them from getting damaged.

• The Christmas ornament storage tote makes great use of space, and does not require much in the way of packing materials to protect your ornaments. They shouldn’t jostle around much, but if you are concerned, you can always line the bottom with some packing popcorn first.

While your ornaments cannot fall out of the bin (unless one of the rods slides into the bin), you should still cover it with a lid to provide your decorations with further protection (especially from dust). It takes only minutes to create this clever Christmas storage solution, and once you have it ready, it will save you so much time and hassle!
