The living room is a special room in your house, because it is a place where all of your family can gather and spend time together. With all of your family though, you also get all of their messes! Children bring their toys, other family members bring their craft projects and electronics, and before long, the living room is in total disarray. Nowhere is this more difficult than a small apartment. Here are some quick tips for organizing a small living room. With these living room organization ideas, you can free up some much-needed space!

• If your kids are always bringing their toys into the living room, think about organizing living room toys directly in the living room. It is always easier to get kids to put their toys away if they don’t have to walk far to do it. Set up a plastic toy bin storage system right there so that your children can put their toys away and get them out again without taking a lot of effort. You should find it much easier to keep both the toys and the kids under control.

• Do you still have all your DVDs and Blu-Ray discs in their original boxes? While the boxes are nice to have, it definitely is not the most space-efficient storage solution for multimedia. Come up with a different system to file your discs. Get a few of those CD storage binders and label them by genre or alphabetize them. What can you do with the original boxes? Just put them in a plastic storage tote and store them in an attic or basement.

• Do something with your remote controls. I recommend a small plastic bin or a basket. This will stop people from strewing them around the room and losing them under pillows or dropping them behind furniture. I also suggest storing a lint-free cloth in the basket so you always have something on hand to wipe down DVDs and delicate electronics with. That way you won’t be tempted to use something you shouldn’t.

• Get your cords squared away. Bundle them up and tape them back so they don’t pose a tripping hazard. Plus, when you do this, it looks so much neater! For your surge protectors, I recommend that you grab a shoe box and cut some holes in the side. Place the protectors inside and run the cords through. This is yet another way of hiding your cords for a more aesthetically appealing setup. Plus, it will keep them free of dust. Next, label your wires. That way you’ll never mix up your TV cord and your DVD cord again.

Getting the living room organized can be quite a chore, but these living room organization tips should now have you off on the right track! As you can see, organizing doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. These ideas are simple, cheap, and fast to set up, and all of them have an immediate payoff!
